Information Technology & Design Excellence

About Rile

I am a freelance consultant and developer based in Hamilton Ontario. I’ve been in the information technology business for over 20 years, and focused on the internet for 15 years.

Recognizing the potential for the internet in 1993, I was one of the first people in Hamilton to actually connect to the internet as a consumer - that’s assuming you agree that the use of a 14.4 modem over twisted copper pairs constituted a ‘connection’. I was so disappointed to learn after a very expensive upgrade that my shiny new 56k modem wasn’t actually capable of 56k in data transmission because the phone lines just couldn’t support it. I miss hearing the sound my modem made when it connected. It was strangely comforting.

My experience and multi-discipline approach has afforded me an opportunity to develop a very special reputation. It can be summarized in one really short sentence.

“I get stuff done.”

Advancing technology and innovating are other guiding principles. I enjoy pursuing excellence.

Mediocrity bores me to death – not interested.

I’m very much involved in the open source world. I was involved in the early years of the PHP manual – a member of the documentation team (still am but dormant). I’ve been consulted and quoted over the years by several authors and publications, as far back as 1995.

I’m fairly busy these days but do take on freelance projects. Have a look at the services page to check out some of the disciplines I enjoy, check out my portfolio which is rather substantial and fairly high end, and if you like, call me. Keep some things in mind when you do:

  • Be prepared for brutal honesty. If you don’t like hearing the truth in its entirety, I’m the wrong guy to talk to
  • I’m not cheap. If you need that, I’m the wrong guy to talk to
  • I don’t clean up other people’s mistakes. If you hired a rinkydink company or freelancer to do some work for you and they messed it up, sorry, I can’t help you. What I can do is “do it properly, like it should have been done in the first place”
  • I commute, and I telecommute. I’m connected to the internet. I don’t need to live in your city to work with you.
  • Finally… yes… there ARE people that use both sides of their brain equally.
